Unruly Clay

Unruly Clay brought together eight makers from different fields and disciplines around clay as a shared medium, each working within the constraint of the functional object — specifically, furniture and furnishings. The process of compromise and invention was presented at the hybrid art space ISland, Taipei.
The shaping of body and intention, the firing at high temperature, the negotiation between precise chemistry and organic behaviour — these are what make ceramic both compelling and often intractable. Because clay resists domestication and its technical demands have no ceiling, the longer one stays with it the more discomfort and ease grow in step. The exhibition was initiated by Yen Yu-Ting and co-curated with Chen Yi-Chiu. Yen has noted that the Chinese title shui-tu-bu-fu, beyond its literal sense of physical maladjustment, also carries the senses of being unconvinced and of not fitting.
Setting the functional object as the brief was not a way of manufacturing contrast or surprise, but of digesting that lived experience of maladjustment and turning it into a legible thread — showing the range of situations encountered when clay is taken up as a medium. The exhibition held unexpected lamps, vases, shelving, diffusers and everyday vessels, each quietly disclosing what its maker had accumulated elsewhere.
Yen Yu-Ting exhibited ceramic sculpture, continuing the practice she began after her 2019 residency at the European Ceramic Work Centre (EKWC). This was the first edition of the series; Unruly Clay 2.0 followed at BACK_Y, Taipei, in 2023.
