The Chosen One: Treasure Hill Light Festival
The 2023 Treasure Hill Light Festival took the twelve stages of the Hero’s Journey as its structure, inviting twelve artists to each respond to one stage across twelve spaces in the Treasure Hill settlement, building a single story in relay. Artistic director: Catherine Lee. Curator: Chuang Chih-Heng.
Yen Yu-Ting's work for the festival, The Fence, responds to the seventh stage of the Hero's Journey — "approach to the inmost cave", the threshold before the heart of the story. Built from nearly ninety stacked ceramic figures into a wall of roughly 180 × 300 × 7 cm, the piece uses modular assembly to exceed the size limits of the kiln while deliberately retaining the tension of imminent collapse. Here the "strong yet fragile" nature of ceramic is not merely a method of making but the basis of the work, responding to the artist's thinking on the human condition under coercion. The wall of figures may read as prejudice, as conditioning, as blind compliance — or as conviction and resistance.
