Body Plate

〈Body Plate〉
Body Plate is a series of shallow plates shaped around the outline of the human body, with variations including two figures, a back view, a reclining pose, a standing pose, and a seated pose. The series comes in pink, blue, and green glazes. Developed from Yu-Ting Yen's 2019 residency project at the European Ceramic Work Centre in the Netherlands, it also marks a starting point in his attempt to transform the human figures from his paintings into everyday objects.
In general, nyotaimori uses the body as a surface for serving food, with gender and eroticism often forming the premise of looking. In Body Plate, however, the body is deliberately simplified: gendered features are removed, leaving only a neutral human outline. The body is no longer the object being placed on the table, but becomes a vessel for holding food and dividing dishes.
The series has also involved collaborations with culinary creators, who designed dishes in response to the plates. Through smell, texture, color, and seasonality, food is arranged along the contours of the plate. When dishes are placed on the surface, the shape of the body becomes part of the presentation. Body Plate can be used like an ordinary plate, while also appearing as a small sculpture lying on the table, adding a sense of humor, ambiguity, and imagination to the dining experience.
